<itunes:subtitle>Are applying online and networking the only ways to get a job? Perhaps. An almost certain way to practice your craft and build meaningful connections is to create value for others. Small projects based on your understanding of their challenges, and how you can add value to them, can be a great alternative to submitting resumes online. </itunes:subtitle>

<description>When submitting resumes online, it can be a big black hole with not feedback.
An alternative approach would be to network with folks and get to know them. Spend some time to build rapport and understand their current challenges and opportunities.
Then create a little project that showcases some of your skills and experience to solve those problems.
Show it to them.
Maybe get some feedback from your mentors or peers first.
Then learn from the experience. And REPEAT!
While each submission may take longer than submitting your resume, the likelihood of a response and the learning will be well worth it!

<description>In our LinkedIn engagement and connections episode we go through some best practices and bad practices to avoid.
Just like in networking, the answer to any "how to network" question on LinkedIn is to "care". You just have to adapt "care" for your particular circumstances.
If you compare your current interactions on LinkedIn to a comparable situation in "dating" then you can gauge how effective you are being.
Connections are one of the most powerful features of LinkedIn, so make sure you build and leverage them. Get some insights on making the connections more meaningful throughbuilding rapport.
Then build the relationship overall over time.

<description>I like to refer to LinkedIn as a "networking event that's happening 24/7/365 with several hundreds of millions of participants".
Many use the platform for job searching, and it has potential to add so much more value to your career.
Learn profile basics like what to do with your picture. Updating your tagline and summary. Putting experience so that you can be searchable. And others.
If you're not on or comfortable with LinkedIn, consider becoming more comfortable as it can be a fantastic research when used correctly.

<description>Doing a network audit starts by taking a look at who you spend the most time with. If you are indeed the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with, do those 5 people have the same values, goals, and ambitions? Most importantly, do they exhibit the behaviours and habits that you need to get to those goals? Look to spend more time with the folks that are aligned with your future goals, and less time with those that don't.
Then take a look at the people that you know surrounding those goals. Are they in the industry, companies and domains that you want to get in to?
If so, then build those meaningful connections.
If not, then make those connections and look to make them meaningful.
You can be proactive about the people you know and whom you interact with.

<description>It's not what you know, it's who you know. A common piece of wisdom when speaking about success in the world. I further the quote by saying "it's not who you know, but who knows you" that can be all of the difference. How many connections do you have on LinkedIn? Now how many connections, that if you messaged them, might actually respond and help with your request. That's the difference when people know you.
We outline our process of networking called BMC = Building Meaningful Connections.
It starts with making CONNECTIONS. You can reach out and connect even if you're shy and an introvert. We share some thoughts and insights on doing so.
Now that we've connected, how do we make the relationships more MEANINGFUL? Often times it starts by being curious, interested, and most importantly looking to add value.
So you've made a meaningful connection, how do you BUILD on them? The easiest way I found was to schedule it. Make sure that you'll allocate time to connect with folks. Make those connections a priority. Then practice with the purpose of getting better!
When you BMC, you'll find that chasing opportunities less because more opportunities just happen to be coming your way.
